IP20, IP40, IP44, IP54, IP65, IP66,IP67: What’s the Difference & Why It Matters?

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings define how well an electrical enclosure protects against solid objects and water. Understanding the differences between IP20, IP40, IP44, IP54, IP65, and IP66 is essential when selecting the right lighting product for a specific environment.
IP20 offers basic protection against fingers or large objects but provides no protection against water, making it suitable only for dry indoor areas. IP40 improves solid object protection but still has no water resistance, often used in controlled indoor environments.
IP44-rated luminaires are protected against small solid objects and water splashes from any direction, making them ideal for bathrooms, covered outdoor areas, or light industrial use. IP54 further enhances dust resistance while still protecting against splashing water, commonly used in workshops or parking garages.
IP65 fixtures are fully dust-tight and resistant to water jets, making them suitable for outdoor and industrial applications. IP66 provides an even higher level of protection, with complete dust sealing and resistance to powerful water jets, ideal for harsh outdoor or heavy industrial environments.
Choosing the correct IP rating ensures safety, reliability, and long-term performance while avoiding unnecessary cost or premature product failure.
